New Worker Essentials (5 Courses)

This is a MANDATORY training program for all workers in Ontario. Participants will receive training in the following:

● Accessibility (AODA)
● WHMIS and GHS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and the Global Harmonized System)
● Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
● Violence and Harassment in the Workplace
● New Worker Awareness

WHMIS can also be offered as a stand-alone course.

Evaluation

Course Content

This is a classroom-based course. Participants will receive training and be evaluated on the following topics:

● Introduction to the AODA
Accessibility standards relevant to worker responsibilities as mandated by the Accessibility for Ontarian with Disabilities Act (AODA).

● WHMIS/GHS – General
An introduction to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and the Globally Harmonized System for hazard classification.

● Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Understanding which PPE is required for different jobs. How to effectively select and use equipment to minimize the risk of injury.

● Violence & Harassment in the Workplace
How to recognize, assess, and minimize the threat of violence and harassment in the workplace.

● New Worker Awareness: Rights and responsibilities of workers
Introduction to workplace health and safety that meets the training requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).

This course strongly emphasizes the importance of safety in the workplace. It is vital that workers, supervisors, and employers become familiar with the occupational hazards that can affect them and those around them.
