Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
Global Harmonized System (GHS)

This training is offered in a New Worker Essentials package with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Violence & Harassment in the Workplace, Accessibility training and New Worker Awareness.

This is a MANDATORY training program for workers who may be exposed to hazardous materials in the workplace.

An employer shall ensure that every worker who works with or who may be exposed in the course of his or her work to a hazardous product is instructed in:

(a) the contents required on labels and the purpose and significance of the information contained on the labels;

(b) the contents required on a safety data sheet and the purpose and significance of the information contained on a safety data sheet;

(c) procedures for the safe use, storage, handling and disposal of a hazardous product;

(d) procedures for the safe use, storage, handling and disposal of a hazardous product when it is contained or transferred in.

The WHMIS is Canada’s hazard communication standard. It is used as a system for hazard classification, labelling and material safety data sheets. The GHS is a global hazard classification standard. Portions of the GHS have been adopted by Canadian legislation and have been incorporated into the WHMIS 2015 system.

WHMIS 2015 must be reviewed annually.

Course Content

This is a classroom based course. Participants will receive training and be evaluated on the following topics:

● Regulations
● GHS (Global Harmonized System)
● Pictograms and labels (workplace & supplier labels)
● Hazard classes and categories
● Safety data sheets (SDS)
● PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
● Routes of entry
● Safe storage
